the december rose
A very good book to read. Not too much information on the author but the story itself is a very good science fiction story. I would recommend this story to people who like science fiction.

A spine-chilling tale of espionage, betrayal and murder....
"The December Rose" is a thrilling tale set in the streets of London in the past, comprising espionage, treachery and brutal murder. Barnacle(a master sweep's boy), is suddenly thrust into a terrifying mystery, with many after his life and a golden locket in his possession. Barnacle meets Mister Gosling and others who give him protection and and a sense of belonging and his life on the run is changed temporarily. Barnacle's life is threatened by the presence of Inspector Creaker and the men under his charge. There are many twists and turns in this tale and there is an unexpected twist in the story right at the end. I really found this book to be extremely interesting and it became increasingly hard to put down as the plot and the storyline developed. I especially enjoyed the ending which I thought made this book very complete. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants a great adventure...

Escalante: The Best Teacher in America
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (November, 1988)
Author: Jay Mathews
Average review score:

Stand and Deliver Dedication
In a culture where if one is asked have you read such and such book and the reply is "no but I saw the movie", then I 'll reverse the question. Did you see "Stand and Deliver"? Well this is the story of the man the movie is about. In the movie, Edward James Olmos takes the lead as Jaime Escalante, an unlikely hero who immigrated from Bolivia and changed the lives of countless Chicano students in East LA. This is the story of dedication, underpay and a determination by one man to change the course of students views of themselves. A teacher with a vision beyond the classroom. He wanted to change the perception of Chicanos and their role in the education process, they could be capable of taking college prep math. While teaching at Garfield High in the 80's he created quite an uproar amongst his peers by making Chicanos believe in themselves, that they could take AP Calculus and succeed. It would require hard work. A great motivator, who used all his skills, he proved the naysayers wrong. This is a great true story that is more detailed and probably more accurate than the Hollywood version. The background information on the principal of Garfield and various students is much richer than the movie version. This is a feel good book that students, teachers and parents alike should enjoy since they are all participants in the deucation process. A motivational tool to be shared by all who believe in the power of determination. An American success story for all.

It will Change your Life
If this book doesn't make you want to quit your job and do something meaningful with your life, nothing will.

Shows the power of a dedicated teacher and high expectations
Actually, the review title pretty much says it. This is the book that was the basis for "Stand by Me." A slightly less dramatic, but more accurate and detailed account of the amazing results when one man believed in his students and helped them learn to believe in themselves. Also includes a section on the value of high standards exams such as the AP Calculus test to showing that the ability of students from disadvantaged areas can be a match for students from anywhere.

Not one of Garfield's better books from the mid to late 80's
Man I love garfield cause he is a very funny cat and he does such things as eating Jon's lasanga, being mean to Odie and destroying Jon's chair, there's a hilarious part when Odie drive's Jon's car inside the house but other than that, it's not a classic like some of Garfield's other books of this era.

Overall recommended.

GARFIELD RULES!
Everybody out there keep buying Garfield books! They can be worth a lot of money someday and can become collector's items! I'm always going to keep all of mine so when I have kids they can read them!

Still great after nearly 11 years
I have had this Garfield book since it first came out and have enjoyed the witty, sarcastic humor of Garfield for 11 years.

Hit the funny bone
I thought this a more well done Garfield book though i admit i had seen some of the strips before, this has been the most enjoyable Garfield book I've read and would recomend it to both non-Garfield readers and readers who may not have it, otherwise, read it again! Why? this book has been the done the best job livening-up my "down" days, plus i especially enjoyed the sunday comics and the funny garfield's humor page. This book also remined me of the 36th garfield book in its humor basic aspects. I Love this book!

The cover is even funny!
"Garfield" is one of the funniest comic strips, next to "Baby Blues"! You would still laugh if you were to skip the words and just look at the facial expressions! I find that in the earlier "Garfield's," there were more witty one-liners, which are shown in this book. I recommend!

Garfield in Paradise
Published in Paperback by Ballantine Books (Trd Pap) (June, 1986)
Author: Jim Davis
Average review score:

One of the better Garfield full-color stories.
When Garfield learns that John is taking him and Odie on vacation he dreams of a wonderful paradise escape but that isn't to be. They're travelling 3rd class to an El-Cheapo resort on an island where the natives worship the only car the rental place has to offer.

Why do the worship it? Because once, many years ago, the local volcano threatened to go off and destroy their tribe. A stereotypical 50's rebel teen drove his classic car (the exact same one John has rented) into the volcano to keep the gods happy.

Now the volcano is getting angry again and the natives expect John to drive into the volcano just like the James Dean guy did before!

The book is full of bright and colorful pictures and Garfield's orange and black fur definitely looks better here than in the black and white pocket books. There are other full-color Garfield stories (such as Garfield in the Rough, Garfield on the Town), but this is one of the best.

Recommended for adults and children who love that cat.

Great, Funny - you were expecting different?
This was a great book! Cute. Funny

This book is awesome, it even has colored pages.
This book is one of the better Garfield books because it is in color. It gets crazy, but who cares? Garfield and Odie's escape from the volcano was really cool!

Cognitive Science: An Introduction - 2nd Edition
Published in Hardcover by Bradfords Directory (March, 1995)
Authors: Neil A. Stillings, Steven E. Weisler, Christopher H. Chase, Mark H. Feinstein, Jay L. Garfield, and Edwina L. Rissland
Average review score:

An introduction, but not a gentle one...
What do you expect from a cognitive science book, which neatly separates all the major fields (Cognitive Psychology, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Neuroscience, Philosophy, Language Acquisition, Semantics, Natural Language Processing, Vision), into chapters? First of all, it is not a mile-wide inch-deep book. Quite the contrary, it has remarkable detail, and it's definitely not an easy book for the beginner. However the fragments are not well-connected to each other, and there are no threads of thought one can follow through the text. Probably the most important problem of cognitive science is the gap between the disciplines, and the lack of a common terminology. The authors have adopted an information-processing view, and overstepped this problem rather than solving it. The result is a biased book, which is really nice if you like the information theoretic approach (like I do), but as a course-book, I suggest it as the supplementary reading.

fascinating
Cognitive Science: An Introduction - 2nd Edition is a fascinating undergraduate text that accurately shows all of the subsets of the cognitive sciences. Cognitive Science: An Introduction - 2nd Edition introduces the advanced undergraduate student to cognitive science subsets such as cognitive psychology, cognitive anthropology, cognitive computational intelligence, cognitive linguistics, cognitive nurro-science, and the philosophy of the cognitive sciences. The diagrams in Cognitive Science: An Introduction - 2nd Edition are very vivid to demonstrate exactly what a philosophers/scientists sees in the subject matter of the cognitive sciences. The undergraduate text provides a very a empirical perspective of the cognitive sciences that differs directly from the classical transcendental perspective of cognition that the philosopher Immanuel Cant demonstrated in the Critique Of Pure Reason. The cognitive sciences can be very difficult to understand, but Cognitive Science: An Introduction - 2nd Edition is one of the best resources to explore the new empirical study of the science of the process of thought.

The Nation's Favourite: The True Adventures of Radio 1
Published in Paperback by Faber & Faber (February, 1999)
Author: Simon Garfield
Average review score:

Corporate revolution killed the radio star
A sharp look at the days when corporate revolution finally came to Radio 1. Dave Lee Travis like something out of Edgar Allen Poe. The true inevitable Shakespearean tragic failure of Mark and Lard at breakfast time. John Peel not mincing words. And Simon Bates, strangely, coming across in high-art unironic mode is the most powerful of the lot. Quote (p.46) Simon Bates on artists: "What is the one thing all performers and writers are? They're paranoid. Your commitment to your own standards is all you have."

Interesting and humourous expose of life on national radio
All the back-stabbing/biting at the U.K.s favourite pop music station. A station which lurches from one disaster to another. The author has enjoyed access to all the major players and paints a picture of a national institution in turmoil. The book should be required readings for anyone learning how not to re-engineer a company. Also of interest to students of pop radio

An excellent look behind the scenes at a national institutio
Simon Garfield has been given unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to the reshaping of Radio One and makes full use of it.

The gloves really come off as the 1980's stars of the station realy say what they think of each other (and the management)

The heady days of 1980's Radio One are shown to live up to their Radio Fab FM Smashey and Nicey image.

My particular favourtie is the transcript of a caller on DLT's 'snooker on the radio' competition. Cringe-inducingly wicked, and very funny.

Smith
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (September, 2000)
Author: Leon Garfield
Average review score:

Humour, details, suspense, several twists - hope this helps!
This story is about a 12-year-old pickpocket known as Smith. One day he picks the pocket of a gentleman, and only a few minutes later he witnesses the murder of the old man. What he has picked is wanted by the employer of the murderers... Smith gets into all kinds of trouble...
The story has a little humour... well, it made me smile anyway... and some very detailed paragraphs, and language used by the characters were realistic, not perfect like in some stories, as realistic as the way we really talk. Even though the story is old, published in the 1960s, this was a good book and got me hooked...

A great book, very well writen
This book is a fantastic book full of murder, chase scenes a some humor. This book about Smith a pickpocket puts you right with him, watching him pickpocketing or being creamed in the face. Simply marvelous book one of the better oones I have read in a long time. You can't go wrong with this book.

A great story, it gives you front row seats to Smith's life.
This story is about a 12 year old pickpocket living in the middle of London. He is a well accomplished pickpocket - it is his only way to survive the rigours of life. Then one day he empties the pockets of a gentleman and finds himself caught up in a all sorts of trouble. He witnesses murder, betrayal and lots more of the London underworld. This book is extremely well written and portrays vivid images of the London underworld. A great read
